Can I go visit a college before making my final decision?

While the answer to this question technically is yes, it is not always that simple to set up a visit and sometimes there just is not enough time. First of all, when talking about campus visits, it is important to differentiate between an official and unofficial visit. Unofficial visits are typically fairly easy to set up as it simply means that you fly over to the US at your own expense and whenever it is convenient to you. The downside of an unofficial visit is that there are restrictions on what you are allowed to do when you are on campus and how much you can actually interact and do with the coaches and team members. Also, when considering an unofficial visit, make sure that it does not slow down the process too much. For example, if a coach just made you an offer, he or she might not be willing to wait several weeks to get a decision from you. So if your plan is to go visit the school a couple of months later, your scholarship offer might not be available anymore at that time.

Now when it comes to an official visit, obviously this is something that needs to be offered to you by the coach. We always ask the coaches for you if this is something that they could possibly do, but the truth is not many universities have the type of budget to fly you in and pay for all of your expenses. Unless you are in contact with an absolute powerhouse school, most of the time with smaller schools, what will happen is that you might have to pay for your flights to the US and back and the school then takes care of all the expenses when you get here (hotel, food, activities, etc.). Official visits also can only last 48 hours, which further complicates the planning, especially when coming from far away.

Lastly, coaches also have a very busy schedule, especially during the school year. Between practice, tournaments and games, as well as other commitments, coaches have a lot on their plate, so that sometimes a visit can be very complicated to set up simply because of difficulties in finding the right dates that work for both you and the coaches. However, we always recommend visiting if it is possible and as mentioned above, if it does not slow down the process and jeopardizes an offer that you have from a coach. And don’t worry, we are there to assist you with these things and always have your best interest at heart, so that we will always try to make a visit happen if it is somehow possible.
