Can you compete in more than one sport?

While it is pretty uncommon to compete in more than one sport as a college athlete, it has definitely been done before. It mostly depends on which sports you wish to compete in, as the seasons should not overlap. For example, sports such as tennis and golf have very similar seasons that run basically all year long, so that combining those two is almost impossible. Participating in american football and baseball on the other hand is possible, since the american football season takes place in the fall semester and baseball is mostly played in the spring. So finding out when your sports are played is always going to be the first step if you are interested in competing in multiple sports.

In addition to that, you also need to discuss this with your coach or with both coaches, as they have to be on board with this idea. Remember, they are the ones offering you a scholarship to represent their team, so if they have an issue with you competing in two sports, then you will not be able to do it. They might have some concerns about you getting injured or not being able to focus on one of the sports enough, so it is very important to talk this over with them before you make any decision.

Lastly, you need to be willing to put in the work. Being a college athlete in one sport is difficult, so imagine doing two sports! You need to have great time management and you will need to be willing to put in a lot of hard work. You won’t have much free time as you still have to take care of your academics as well. So make sure you ask yourself the question whether you are capable and willing to put in almost twice as much work as a regular one sport student-athlete. If the answer is yes, then it can definitely be done and you could very well be one of the very few to accomplish this very daunting task.
