What are my degree options in the US and what are the differences to degrees from other countries?

First and foremost, you can basically study the same degrees in the United States as you would in your home country. If anything, you might even have more options over here as there are a lot of universities that have specialized in newer degree fields such as the technology industry or have become worldly renowned in areas such as fashion or acting. So you can definitely find any possible degree in the US and should have plenty of options.

Now, there are some degrees that might be a bit tricky to combine with the very demanding daily life of a student-athlete. Especially those degree options with labs in the afternoon are typically difficult for athletes as they interfere with your daily practice schedule. Then there are also some degree options that will most likely only allow to work in the USA after you graduate. Certain law or education degrees, for instance, are very specific for the US job market and might not be accepted in Europe or other parts of the world. So do your research prior to starting your college career or simply ask us and we will be more than happy to help you pick the right major.

Lastly, in terms of the actual college career and the duration of your bachelor’s degree, there is one big difference between studying in the US and studying in another country. Over here, an undergraduate degree (or bachelor’s) will typically take four years to complete, compared to three years in most other countries. The reason for that is that over here in America you will first need to complete your so-called “basic courses” before starting to specialize into your major. Those courses are classes such as mathematics, English, history or certain sciences and they will typically take you about one year to complete. This explains the extra year of a bachelor’s degree in the US and helps undecided students pick a major that they really like, rather than being rushed into choosing a degree that they are not really that interested in.
