Who calls the shots in the recruiting process?

One of the biggest misconceptions about the recruiting process, is when athletes think that they are the ones who dictate the recruiting process and that they are the ones deciding when they can receive an offer or when they can make their decision by. Unfortunately, that is not the case and quite frankly, the exact opposite is the case.

Coaches typically recruit several players for one or maybe two scholarship spots, making recruiting extremely competitive. In most cases, coaches will take their time in order to find the best possible athlete for their team. And since they are the ones making the offers, they are the ones in the driver’s seat when it comes to when they make their offers or if they make one at all. The same applies to official visits. Those have to be offered to you by coaches since they are the ones paying for it or at least for a portion of it. So you demanding to come for an official visit is not the right thing to do and will very often even be perceived as arrogant or greedy by some coaches.

Another very important factor throughout the recruiting process, and we have discussed this on several occasions before, is that you need to work extremely hard in order to stand out against your competition. You do that by staying engaged, by showing interest, and by just being more likable than other athletes. As mentioned above, coaches will recruit several athletes at the same time who all have very similar athletic abilities, so very often they will make their decisions based on character and whether a player is more likable to them. So keep that in mind throughout the recruiting process and like we always say, treat this like a job interview. Pay attention to detail, do all the small things, and we guarantee you that it will increase your chances of getting amazing scholarship offers from some of the very best universities.
